CMQ Workshops
We have two workshops available this year. Both include a wonderful
catered buffet lunch. The price for each is $40 for CMQ or Common
Threads Quilt Guild members, and is $50 for non-members. The location for
both is the Columbus School for the Blind, where we hold our regular
monthly meetings. For more information, or to register, please contact Luci Gubbins.
"Using Photographs to Create Patterns: Appliqué Quilting With
Fusible Web", with Kate Gorman
April 19,
2008, 9AM-3PM
(Kate is our April Meeting speaker, so check our calendar for more
information on her.)
This class is designed for quilters who want to make the transition
from working with traditional patterns into making quilts using their
own personal imagery, but don’t know where to begin. Working with
photographs, we will make patterns and transform your photos into fun
works of fiber art. If you want to make a pictorial quilt, but are
intimidated by the drawing process, this class is for you.
The goal of this workshop is to create a quilt top and learn
stitching techniques to enhance and stabilize the appliqué.
Supplies:
Photograph(s)
Scissors - both fabric and paper
Iron - I will have a few extras, so don't bring your $100 Rowenta - it
might get glue on it.
Cardboard surface about 20" x 24"
All the fabric you think you need *
Sewing machine **
Fusible Web such as Wonder-Under ***
Tracing Paper ***
Thread
Straight Pins
Embellishments (if you like that sort of thing)
We will not have access to a copy machine at the workshop so it is
important that you enlarge your photograph on a copier before class
begins. Photos of pets, plants, wildlife, and landscapes will work
best. Start with a simple image: a chicken, a single vase of
daffodils, a house. If the photo is too complex, you will need to do
some editing. Enlarge the photo on a copier to a size that will work
for a small wall hanging. I recommend between 200-400%. Make sure that
the image is still fairly readable after enlarging. Don’t forget to
bring your original photograph with you! You will need it for
reference.
*If you are a traditionalist, choose fabrics close to the colors in
the original photo. I recommend shaking things up a bit and trying the
unexpected, say, all polka dots, or making your dog purple. (I will
talk about that a lot.) I also recommend bringing more fabric than you
think you need. My most successful workshops occur when people bring
lots, but are also willing to share/trade. Sometimes your neighbor has
just the right blue, or you may have just what they need.
**We may not get to the stitching so leave your sewing machine in
the car until after lunch.
***Sometimes it is hard to gauge how much fusible web and tracing
paper you will need. If you want to supply your own you should bring 5
yards of Wonder Under and 3-4 sheets of 24"x26" tracing paper. Kate
will have tracing paper and Wonder Under and charge you by the
piece/yard.
